The day that Derartu Tulu won the women’s 10,000 meters race in Barcelona 1992 – draping the Ethiopian flag across her shoulders – was the historic day when the first black African woman won a gold medal.
Before Derartu athletics was fully dominated by the male gender in Ethiopia. But nowadays it seems that is shifting towards the female. In the 2012 London Olympics Ethiopia got three gold medals through her heroines. In the 2015 Beijing World athletics Championship Ethiopia got all the medals through the female athletes.
In Rio the first gold was collected through the heroine Almaz Ayana. It shows that what Derartu began with lone gold now becomes the inspiration for the female gender.
